SUMMARY:

Stewie Little never knew his parents. He and his brother Theo have been raised by their older sister.

When Stewie’s grandmother passed away, Stewie committed to looking after her chickens. Every day he goes door to door selling eggs. One day, he deviates from his routine and meets someone new… a person who very soon will become central to his life.

Opening line: ‘Stewie rolled his shoulders and pulled his shirt away from his sweaty neck.'

Stewie doesn’t usually visit this particular house on his egg delivery run, but when he meets an obstinate older woman, Marilyn (a name which he manages to extract out after many humorous attempts), he forms an emotional connection to her. Marilyn is becoming forgetful and between that and her matter-of-fact (often blunt) manner, reminds Stewie of his recently passed grandmother.

I always love Hyde’s lyrical writing… she makes her tales seem so real. Her stories are always uplifting (but also tinged with sorrow)… she always manages to tug at my heart-strings. The way she can get into the heads and hearts of people of all different ages, and reflect this so artfully in her writing, is fantastic.

I found Stewie an adorable young human. He’s so kind and possesses a desperate need to fix everything. Whenever someone uses a ‘big word’, I love how he says: “I don’t know what that means” (or something along those lines). Hyde makes it feel like this is a kid you already know… someone for whom you have very warm feelings.

Here’s a little insight into Stewie’s beautiful character: “It’s okay… she doesn’t have to do anything special to get me to love her.”

What a lovely story! Catherine Ryan Hyde is an always-reliable author for me.
